For participation i did a fair amount of commenting on other students blog posts and i came to class regularly i believe i missed 2 or 3 classes. I occasionally used my twitter to keep followers up to date with my assignments and daily creates and i also tweeted links in class when it was asked. I would agree that once we got into the video assignments my commenting died off but mostly that was because i was so busy struggling to grasp this new lesson. In my previous post i have listed my created assignments.

4 Assignments

Sunday, April 29th, 2012

1. i created my first one about a assignment where you did a day in the life of your feet in 3-4 photos and then arrange them in a way that tell a story about your day.

2.  your third eye – For this assignment collect a few photos from the perspective of your phone, allow us to see what the phone sees..something that we would not normally notice.

3.  a word..a picture..a story – Chose up to 5-10 words..just randomly pick them don’t over think it just chose these words out of the blue. Then do a Google image search on these images and chose one of the first visible photos for the word..after you have chosen your words and your images put them together in video form and tell a story..include a sentence with each image to help guide your story or try and tell it without the sentences.

4.  Annoying Sounds – Record a sound that you find to be absolute annoying and then edit it and make it a sound that is less annoying or better yet one that is not annoying at all.

Final Reflection Post

Response/Update on Cyber-infrastructure: After going back and reviewing my previous post on cyber-infrastructure i feel that i stand in agreement with all of the previous stuff that was said. I think technology advancement is a gift..yes we may depend on it a little too much at times but that’s no different than depending on faith and superstition to get you through tough times or a big exam. I still don’t believe that it has to come down to pen and paper VS computers and i pads and that they can collectively work together!!

My meaning of Storytelling: Storytelling to me is being able to convey some sort of message or emotion through a means of many different approaches…be it through pictures, song or words. Story telling can take many forms, it can be educational, entertaining or meaningful but always gets a point across…This class taught me that creativity is key and that you shouldn’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone..its okay to get a little crazy at times and let your creative juices flow. This class also helped me to learn so many new and fun ways to use my computer…at first it went no further than typing papers and watching tv online…now i know how to make and edit videos, i know how to edit photos and i even know how to blog…i can honestly say that its something i never thought i would do.

Best Assignments and daily creates: I enjoyed many of the assignments but of course my favorite ones were the ones that involved taking pictures. So far i would have to say my top five would be .. 1.  the final project that i just completed…i love the way it came out (minus my typing error) and i think it should how hard i worked on it and how it was more of a way of expressing deeper emotions than just trying to get something done. 2. I was also very pleased with my movie trailer mash-up trying to pick two movies that complemented each other in a way that would change the meaning of one of the movies was a challenging task..but i was happy to see how it turned out..i used the music from Annie mashed with the trailer from orphan and it showed how Esther began by coming off as sweet and innocent as orphan Annie but was really a dark and evil individual. 3.   movies that changed our lives was also very fun to highlighted keep points in my childhood and also showed how we all continue to have the inner child that we carry around with us. 4. my favorite daily create was tdc39 where we had to take a photo of a bird for that day…that day ended up being very rainy and gloomy and the birds definitely did not want to come out and play..but i managed to spot a few up in a tree and the photos came out very dark and mysterious. 5. and lastly my other favorite daily create was tdc34 where you had to take a photo of a hand..i chose mine and loved the emotion behind the picture that came from just making the image black and white.

Future Students: I would definitely recommend taking the class but i would not say do it with a heavy course load, which is what i did, its a fun class and you learn a lot and you get to let your creative side shine. It’s  not an easy A but getting an A is possible. I would say take the class and be prepared to work hard and to also have fun!!

If i were in charge of the class im sure my class would become a photography class haha..i don’t think that there is much that i would change i like it where it stands, but i would possibly not have it labeled as a 1oo level class.

Final Project – Love Lost: A story told through google images

Sunday, April 29th, 2012

Inspiration behind project: My inspiration for this project came from my initial desire when thinking of this project..i want to tell a story using images but i wasn’t sure if i would be able to do this without words. Then i thought it would fun to try and capture all the things that my phone saw that we didn’t think about when using our phones or a daily basis but i found that to be a little more difficult than i thought and i wasn’t as into it as i wanted to be. Then while playing around on Google images one day i had the awesome idea of telling a story using images that i found on Google…i would come up with 10-12 words and then select an image from the first ones that came up and then i would look at the images and come up with a story. I wanted to be as creative as possible and i wanted to incorporate my own voice but the way i wanted the pictures to work it left too many awkward i inserted the text and the words with audio that i thought fit the story line.

What it means to me: I find that i was able to get really involved in the story. A lot of kids witness the affects of their parents fighting and divorce and they are not realized until its too late. This relates to what i want to do when i finally get my masters..i want to be a social worker for a few years and then go on to work with open and closed adoptions. I think my story had a good message and that it is saying that no matter how escalated and involved parents are in a divorce or short separation they have to remember they are not the only ones involved.

What makes it storytelling: Its storytelling because it tells a story, and it does so in more than one way. It tells a story through the words that have been pair with their picture and through the pictures themselves. A story can be told in many different ways..this project i think combined some of those ways.

Process: In order to make this video i came up with my list of 12 words (fear, jealousy, prayer, grief, revenge, man, hate, fire, water, woman, child, and nature). I googled each word and went to the images page and took a screen shot. After doing this for each word i chose a photo for each word, after selecting the photos i took about 15 minutes just looking at them and then came up with my story. I uploaded my images in movie maker and then added the story line to each photo and then i selected an audio clip from my computer that i thought fit the story line.

🙁 I realized after i uploaded my video that on the picture of fire the word together is spelled wrong 🙁

project update

Sunday, April 29th, 2012

After a lot of struggling and frustration i decided that i would change my final project topic. I decided that i am going to tell a story through Google i am not using the pictures and making you put together the story.. i am including the words but i chose an image from the first images that appeared when you type in the word. I chose 12 words to create a story..i made up a list of words and then i chose my images and then from there i created my story. It turned out to be a story about lost love from the perspective of a frightened and confused child. I originally planned to incorporate my voice but it left a lot of awkward silences and i couldn’t get all of the voice recordings to sound the way i wanted without them being too low to hear..anyway the video will be up soon..hope you enjoy !!

One Story / Four Icons [remixed]

Sunday, April 15th, 2012

For this assignment  reduce a movie, story, or event into its basic elements, then take those visuals and reduce them further to simple icons, four of them. Write your blog post up but do not give away the answer, let people guess! The challenge is to find the icons that suggest the story, but do not make it so easy, Remixed: Put on your elbow patches, strike a dramatic pose, and give an assignment an over the top critique as delivered by an art snob.

At the beginning of this post i included the link for the four icon story that i am going to critique. The assignment was submitted by OFWGKTA_Jordan.

I want to start off by saying how could you go wrong with a rage comic..they always make any topic funny. Also seeing that something is a rage comic makes the chances of people wanting to look at it or read it so much more greater. The message portrayed by your four selected images was well thought out and the story was clear and straight forward, and truthfully accurate. I would of liked the images to have been just a little bigger, but the way they were lined out side by side in the form of a comic strip was a good touch…it really illustrated the cause of effect of each stage portrayed by each image. Well done!!

Love: In Three Frames [remixed]

Sunday, April 15th, 2012

For this assignment use three photos to tell the story of a relationship. You can use “real” photos that you’ve taken in a relationship. Or search for Creative Commons images on Flickr and find a story to tell with what you discover. You can find a bunch of examples at Slate today and to remix it Add a sound of country music to an assignment, or alternatively, change the storyline to include a dog that is died, a partner that has left, a truck that no longer works, etc.

I chose to use the photos submitted for this assignment by yungwun315, the story already involved the lost of a loved one and consisted of a tragic ending which already met the standards for it to be titled “countrified” so i decided to select a few more images from a google search on failed relationships and turned them into a video slide show and added the song Busted by the isley brothers, which is not a country song, but it fit the photos well.

Over-Dramatic Reading [remixed]

Sunday, April 15th, 2012

This is a remix of the reading of Kittens, Kittens, Kittens submitted by Ben Rimes and read by his wife. The original assignment was to Choose any written material (a song, poem, short book, excerpt from a novel, scene from a television show, news article, etc.) and record a dramatic reading. Read your selection in a way that alters the message of the original material (at an odd pace, overly excited, sad, etc. — be creative, make it your own). Make sure you mention what it is you are reading, and who the author of the material is. and then the remix part of the assignment was to Take an assignment and alter it very slightly. Make one small change or multiple changes. Just make sure they aren’t too obvious. Think about those “side-by-side photos in magazines, can you spot the 10 differences between the two?” type deal. Think about letting your audience know how many changes there are so they can look for them all. You’d be amazed at what people notice and what they subconsciously choose to overlook!

I decided to upload the audio file to audacity and add an echo effect, it was just subtle enough as to not take away from the reader and the emphasis she placed on the story during her dramatic reading.

Final Project Update

Monday, April 9th, 2012

So since my last post about the final project i have decided to name this work of art my third eye and it will be a mash-up of selected video clips taken by my iPhone during random parts of my day. What i hope the purpose of this project to be is to highlight the many things that we miss or overlook during our day and how your phone most likely never misses a beat. I tried to get some videos this weekend but so far all i was able to get was some major foot traffic lol, so i think i might need to work on better angle placement and work on places where i will be doing a lot of movement. The Multicultural Fair this weekend will be a great opportunity to get some great footage.
