Film Essay – Curly Sue

Sunday, March 25th, 2012

For this Video Essay Assignment you had to select several scenes from your favorite film (or one of your favorites), and edit them together and comment on some of the filmic elements of the scenes? Why do you like these scenes? What strikes you about them? What makes them good cinema? Is there a subtext at work in this film? In short, construct an essayistic commentary on the scenes as a narrator explaining to your audience what you find important about the scene, and why. What’s more, what do the details you have pinpointed say about the film more generally.

I chose this movie because it is one of my favorites and the concept of it is very sweet and hart warming. What i saw as the directors vision behind this movie was that unconventional families are more common than we think, and that it doesn’t matter what background or class you come from love is love.

Cooking Show (pre-production)

Sunday, March 18th, 2012

Okay so i chose this one because i love to scramble eggs lol and i have always told my mom that my scrambled eggs are pretty enough to be on television ha!

Do you love cooking? Why not make your favorite recipe in front of the camera? Host a cooking show in your own kitchen and show us how it’s done. We’re not all Jamie Oliver, but we can try (see how he does it)

So i would have my camera set up and i would start by describing the equipment needed the settings that the stove would need to be on and take them step by step with my scrambled egg process! Then of course at the end after plating the dish there is the signature taste test where the cooking host raves about how great the dish taste lol.

Pop-up video Annotation (pre-production)

Sunday, March 18th, 2012

For this assignment it tells you to Use Mozilla’s Popcorn Maker to create a popup video annotating your favorite video mashup (either your own or someone else’s). See the example done for the Buddy/Edward mashup.

So i would  use the popcorn maker and i checked out the site and it seems to walk you through step by step on how you could go about doing this. I think i would like to do a mash-up between twilight and the vampires diaries. (mainly because i just don’t like twilight and so i can show how awesome vamp diaries is ha)

I think i would like to make a video contrasting the two type of relationships that is portrayed in each show because they both have male vampires that fall for human ladies!!

I would first have to find a couple of clips from each show that compliment each other and that will help the video flow well.

Analyze A Movie

Sunday, March 18th, 2012

The movie that i chose to analyze for this assignment was the 1991 comedy titled curly sue that starred Jim Belushi, Alisan Porter and Kelly Lynch. For starters ill give a little blurb for those of you who have not had the pleasure of seeing the movie, it is about a guy who takes in his deceased girl friends child and raises her as his own after he mother dies and he cannot find it in his heart to place her into foster care. They bounce around and make due the best they can, then they meet this woman who is a lawyer and is doing well for herself, they decide to use her for a good meal and warm place to stay and long story short after some unfortunate events the story ends with the two finding love, happiness and a wife and mother!

So ill talk about each aspect a little separately before i chose my two favorite clips from the movie and analyze them a little more in depth. Now in regards to the writing, the way the story was told..i found it to be believable and comical at the same time. I first watched the movie when i was about ten or eleven and i remember falling in love with the father daughter relationship that the two main characters portrayed..mostly because i am a daddy’s girl. The acting was not forced and accurately portrayed, when a character expressed an emotion it was clear what that emotion was be it that they were, sad or angry. The movie was set in Chicago. It was clear that it was winter and the set design and clothing choices were appropriate. The power dynamics between the three main characters were obvious and it was not hard to decipher which class that they were supposed to be portraying. The audio was done well, background music and action sounds were done appropriately. I would have to say in regards to audio that one of my favorite and well done scenes was when he was pretending that this woman had hit him with his car. His daughter (curly sue) takes a two by four and rams in into this woman’s car to create the illusion that she had hit this man..i loved it. It was realistic and creative, i could definitely see someone doing this to get over an individual to receive a hand out or a warm bed for a free nights. Camera work was excellent, you always had what was necessary in the shot, never was there other things in a scene of little importance that would catch your eye and draw you from the story.

This clip is of curly sue singing the star spangled banner while watching some late night television while everyone is asleep. What i love about this scene is how her singing starts out of the blue in the middle of dead silence. In doing so she wakes up her father and the woman they are staying with and she is suppose to be singing so loudly that she can be heard out in the streets and that is when the camera pans out to the city and Sue’s singing is still blaring in the background. It just really illustrated the power of her voice and her dedication to her performance and hoe oblivious she is to the time.

The last clip that i chose is the ending scene of the movie when Grey gets Sue back and you see the relationship that has slowly been evolviong between the two come to light. Emotions were a big part to the last scenes of the movie because as a viewer your heart is suppose to be breaking for Sue and you are suppose to think that she is never going to see her father again. The reunion of the two is heart breaking but wonderful and who doesn’t love a nice happy ending.

Listen To One Radio Show

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

I Went to the This American Life Radio page and listened to the segment on What i did for love. I enjoyed listening to this because it’s just so crazy what some people will do for love. Kristy Kruger was the woman he was talking to and I wasn’t really able to tell whether or not she was there in the studio or if she was on a call. He was talking with her about how she chose to deal with a recent break-up she had just had. It was creepy and funny how dedicated she was to trying to get this guy back.  I enjoyed all the crazy things she did from serenading him to traveling following some of his favorite bands or something like that and putting his number in bathroom stalls, asking these woman to call him and tell him that his chulupa (not sure how to spell that) missed him lol. I like the tone of the radio guys voice the whole time, very calm and not to judgey and the fading in and out with the music was done well too.

Audio Assignments!!

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

My first Assignment that i did was to make a ringtone, the thing said for it to be 30 to 40 seconds and mine is only 13 so maybe its more a of text tone, but i chose wind and water because they just go well ha! I also wanted to make it less ringtone like because i like when people use strange sounds and noises for ringtones, before i uploaded music to my iPhone my ringtone was the duck quacking! I got these sounds from !

This was my kind of southern accent while placing a strange order at McDonalds, every time i listen to it i laugh lol but i hate recording my voice it is just so strange to me ha

I chose to read the activation guide that came with my replacement iPhone 4 because those 3 simple steps are crucial to a successful activation ha.

This story was inspired by the episode of Glee I saw that tuesday night before class! Quinn was rushing to get to Finn and Rachel’s wedding because she was running a little late, after having to go get her dress from home. Rachel was texting her wanting to know where she was and telling her to hurry because they needed to start soon. Quinn picks up the phone and begins responding, appearing to run a stop sign and is hit by a truck. 🙁 So babies no texting and driving.

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

This is where my dad has been relocated and i cant wait to get home i haven’t seen him in forever and i also have a very special friend there!

I made this image on my iPhone, i find that i make a lot of images better from my phone than i can with some of these complicated photo editors. I found three images on Google, saved them to my computer and then emailed them to myself. I then save them to my phone and open them in an app called pic collage, from their you chose the best frame for you and move things around to make them look the way you want.
